Psalms 119:8

"I will give thanks to you with uprightness of heart, when I learn your righteous judgments."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 119:8, the psalmist expresses a commitment to genuine praise and thanksgiving to God. This promise comes after learning and understanding God's righteous judgments, indicating that true worship stems from sincere knowledge and reverence for divine law. The phrase "uprightness of heart" underscores the importance of authentic and heartfelt devotion, suggesting that one's spiritual sincerity is as vital as intellectual comprehension in genuine worship.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

I will keep thy statutes -Thy commands; thy laws. This expresses the firm purpose of the psalmist, He meant to keep the law of God; he could confidently say that he would do it - yet coupled with the prayer which follows, that God would not forsake him. O forsake me not utterly -Hebrew, β€œTo very much;” so as to leave me to myself. His confidence that he would keep the commandments of God was based on the prayer that God would not leave him.
