Psalms 119:104

"How sweet are your promises to my taste, more than honey to my mouth!"

Key Reflection

The verse Psalms 119:104, "How sweet are your promises to my taste, more than honey to my mouth!" expresses the profound joy and satisfaction a person finds in God's word. In this passage, the term "honey" symbolizes something deeply pleasurable and desirable, akin to the sweetness of food that brings delight to one’s taste buds. This metaphor underscores the spiritual nourishment and comfort derived from the Law of the Lord, highlighting how central and cherished it is to the psalmist's life, surpassing even physical pleasures in its value.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Through thy precepts I get understanding -A true understanding; a correct view of things; a knowledge of thee, of myself, of the human character, of the destiny of man, of the way of salvation - the best, and the only essential knowledge for man. This knowledge the psalmist obtained from the “precepts” of God; that is, all that God had communicated by revelation. This passage expresses in few words what had been said more at length inPsalms 119:98-100. Therefore I hate every false way -I see that which is right and true, and I pursue it.
