Psalms 119:1

"Psalms."

Key Reflection

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the LORD’s law. This opening verse of Psalm 119 sets a tone of blessing for those who adhere strictly to God's commandments and live in accordance with His statutes. The term "blameless" (וּצְדִיקֵי) implies a life lived without any significant transgression, while "walk according to the LORD’s law" (לַחֶסֶד יָרְשׁוּ אֹתָהּ) suggests a lifestyle deeply rooted in and guided by divine instruction. This verse invites readers to consider the value of living a life governed by faithfulness to God’s word, echoing themes found throughout the psalm and reflecting broader biblical teachings on obedience and righteousness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Blessed are the undefiled in the way -In the way or journey of life; in the path of religion; in the road which leads to heaven. As life - the religious life - is represented under the image of a journey, the expression here is equivalent to saying, “Blessed are those who in the journey of life - in their religious course - are pure, Sincere, uncontaminated.” On the word way, see the notes atPsalms 1:6. The margin here on the word undefiled, is perfect, or sincere. So the Hebrew. The word is the same as inJob 1:1, where it is rendered “perfect.” See the notes at that passage. The Greek translation is undefiled -ἄμωμοιamōmoi.
