Psalms 119:140

"My zeal wears me out, because my enemies ignore your words."

Key Reflection

The psalmist expresses profound exhaustion from his intense devotion and commitment to God's word (verse 140). This weariness stems from the indifference of those who oppose him, who have forgotten or disregarded the divine commands meant to guide and sustain the faithful. In this context, the term "zeal" reflects a deep passionate dedication, while "ignore your words" indicates a severe breach in communal faithfulness, highlighting the personal cost borne by the psalmist as he remains steadfast despite the hostility around him.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thy word is very pure -Margin, “tried or refined.” See the word explained in the notes atPsalms 18:30. Therefore thy servant loveth it -Therefore I love it. I love it because it is pure, holy, true; not merely because it will save me. Apart from all reference to myself. I love thy truth as truth; I love purity as purity; I love law as law; I love holiness as holiness. This is true religion.
