Psalms 119:73

"The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver. YODH"

Key Reflection

For the original audience, Psalms 119:73 highlighted the supreme value of God's law over any material wealth. In a society where precious metals like gold and silver were highly prized for their economic and social significance, this verse emphasized that the wisdom and guidance found in the divine word held far greater worth. The psalmist was expressing profound reverence for God’s teachings, asserting that they offered true fulfillment and spiritual enrichment beyond what mere earthly possessions could provide.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thy hands have made me -This commences a new division of the psalm, in which each verse begins with the Hebrew letterJod(יy) - or “i” - the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, called inMatthew 5:18, “jot;” “one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass from the law.” The words “thy hands have made me” are expressive of the idea that he had been formed or moulded by God - as the “hands” are the instruments by which we do anything. See the notes atJob 10:8; comparePsalms 100:3. And fashioned me -Fitted me; shaped me, formed me as I am. He had received alike his existence and the particular form of his existence from God - as a man makes a statue or image. ComparePsalms 139:13-16.
