Psalms 119:49

"I reach out my hands for your commandments, which I love. I will meditate on your statutes. ZAYIN"

Key Reflection

In Psalms 119:49, the psalmist expresses a deep longing and commitment to God's commands. By saying "I reach out my hands for your commandments," the psalmist vividly conveys an image of earnestness and desire, as if literally stretching out to grasp these divine instructions that he cherishes deeply. The act of reaching out symbolizes not just intellectual acknowledgment but a heartfelt embrace of God's word. Following this, the psalmist declares his intention to meditate on these statutes, indicating a resolve to ponder and internalize God’s commands thoroughly, ensuring they shape his thoughts and actions.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Remember the word unto thy servant -This commences a new division of the psalm, in which each verse begins with the Hebrew letterZayin(זz) - answering to our “z.” There is nothing special in this portion of the psalm as indicated by the letter. The language here is a prayer that God would not forget what he had promised; that all that he had said might be fulfilled; that the expectations and hopes which he had raised in the mind might be realised. It is language which may be used with reverence, and without any implication that God would forget - as a child might with propriety and love ask a parent to remember a promise which he had made.
