Psalms 119:115

"You are my hiding place and my shield. I hope in your word."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 119:115, the psalmist speaks of God as both a sanctuary ("hiding place") providing safety and security, and as a shield protecting against harm. This imagery evokes a deep sense of trust and reliance on divine protection, emphasizing that hope in God’s word sustains the psalmist through all circumstances. The metaphor of the "shield" was particularly significant in ancient warfare, symbolizing not just defense but also confidence and security in battle—a powerful image for spiritual warfare as well.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Depart from me, ye evil-doers -Workers of iniquity; bad men. See the notes atPsalms 6:8. This indicates a determined purpose that nothing should deter or allure him from the service of God. A man who wishes to serve God, and lead a religious life, must separate himself from the society, as such, of unprincipled people. For I will keep the commandments of my God -This is my fixed resolution.
