Exodus 12:4

"Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth day of this month, they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household;"

Key Reflection

This commandment instructs the Israelites to select a perfect lamb on the tenth day of the month, symbolizing the need for purity and sacrifice. It sets the stage for the Passover, where the lamb's blood would mark the doors, protecting the firstborn from the angel of death, foreshadowing Jesus as the ultimate sacrificial Lamb who saves His people from spiritual death.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Tradition specifies ten as the least number; but the matter was probably left altogether to the discretion of the heads of families. The last clause should be rendered: “each man, according to his eating, ye shall count for the lamb.”
