Jeremiah 50:38

"A sword is on their horses, on their chariots, and on all the mixed people who are in the middle of her; and they will become as women. A sword is on her treasures, and they will be robbed."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 50:38, the prophet envisions a devastating judgment upon Babylon. The original audience would have understood this to mean that even those typically associated with military strength—horses and chariots, as well as mixed peoples who might support the army—would be affected by the sword, rendering them defenseless and vulnerable like women in battle. Similarly, the treasures of Babylon, symbolizing its wealth and power, would not be spared, facing plunder and destruction. This vivid imagery conveys the certainty and completeness of God’s judgment against Babylon.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

A drought -Rather, “a sword,” i. e., military skill and forethought. They are mad upon their idols -Omit their. The word for idols, literally terrorsPsalms 88:16is used in this one place only of objects of worship. Probably it refers to those montrous forms invented as representations of their deities.
