Acts 5:4

"But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the price of the land?"

Key Reflection

Peter's rebuke in Acts 5:4 highlights the spiritual danger of deceit and hypocrisy. By accusing Ananias of being influenced by Satan, Peter underscores how sin can corrupt one’s heart and lead to rebellion against the Holy Spirit, even among believers.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 9. Whiles it remained. As long as it remained unsold. This place proves that there was an obligation imposed on the disciples to sell their property. They who did it, did it voluntarily; and it does not appear that it was done by all, or expected to be done by all. And after it was sold, etc. Even after the property was sold, and Ananias had the money, still there was no obligation on him to de- vote it in this way. He had the disposal of it still. The apostle mentions this to show him that his offence was peculiarly aggravated.
