Acts 5:16

"They even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mattresses, so that as Peter came by, at least his shadow might overshadow some of them."

Key Reflection

In Acts 5:16, the people of Jerusalem went beyond just bringing their sick into the vicinity of Peter as he passed; they meticulously positioned them on cots and mattresses to maximize every opportunity for healing. This dramatic scene highlights the profound trust the community placed in Peter and by extension, in Jesus. For a first-century audience, this act of laying out the sick was more than physical; it symbolized their hope that Peter's presence, even his shadow, could bring about divine intervention and physical healing, underscoring the belief that miracles still occurred through Christ’s followers.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 16. There came also, etc. Attracted by the fame of Peter's miracles, as the people formerly had been by the miracles of the Lord Jesus. Vexed. Troubled, afflicted, or tormented. Unclean spirits. Possessed with devils; called unclean because they prompted to sin and impurity of life. See Barnes "Mt 4:23,24. And they were healed. Of these persons it is expressly affirmed that they were healed. Of those who were so laid as that the shadow of Peter might pass over them, there is no such affirmation.
