Psalms 139:1

"Psalms."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 139:1, David exclaims, "LORD, you have searched me, and you know me." This declaration reflects a profound awareness of God's omniscience and the intimate knowledge He possesses. From a cultural context, this verse challenges any notion of privacy or hiddenness in one’s life, emphasizing that in the presence of an all-knowing God, there is no escape from His scrutiny. David's acknowledgment highlights both his dependence on God and his trust in divine providence, setting the stage for further reflections on the nature of God's intimate relationship with humanity.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

O Lord, thou hast searched me -The word rendered searched, has a primary reference to searching the earth by boring or digging, as for water or metals. SeeJob 28:3. Then it means to search accurately or closely. And known me -As the result of that search, or that close investigation. Thou seest all that is in my heart. Nothing is, or can be, concealed from thee. It is with this deep consciousness that the psalm begins; and all that follows is but an expansion and application of this idea.
