Luke 1:66

"Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea."

Key Reflection

Fear gripped the people living in the vicinity, a reaction common when an extraordinary event or message was revealed. In first-century Judea, such sudden fear and widespread discussion about the events surrounding Jesus' birth would have been deeply significant, emphasizing the miraculous nature of these occurrences and their impact on the local community. The hill country of Judea, known for its rugged terrain and small settlements, provided a network of smaller communities where news could quickly spread, making this event a topic of conversation across various villages and towns.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 66. What manner of child, &c. Such were the remarkable circumstances of his birth that they apprehended that he would be distinguished as a prophet, or that great events would result from his life. The hand {k} of the Lord was with him. The word hand is used to denote aid, protection, favour. We stretch out the hand to aid those whom we wish to help. The expression here means that God aided him, protected him, or showed him favour.
