Psalms 80:17

"It’s burned with fire. It’s cut down. They perish at your rebuke."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 80:17, the prophet describes a scene of destruction and devastation, likely invoking imagery from recent history or familiar to the original Israelite audience, such as the Babylonian exile. The cutting down and burning symbolize God's judgment, while the perishing at his rebuke highlights how swiftly and completely his wrath can consume even those who appear secure. This vivid portrayal would have resonated with readers facing national calamity, reminding them of their vulnerability before God’s power and sovereignty.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand -Luther renders this, “Let thy hand guard the folks of thy right hand, and the people whom thou hast powerfully chosen.” The right hand is the place of honor; and the phrase “the man of thy right hand” means one who occupies such a position of honor. The phrase “Let thy hand be upon” is ambiguous. It may denote either favor or wrath; let it be upon him either to protect him, or to punish him.
