Luke 1:18

"He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”"

Key Reflection

In Luke 1:18, the angel Gabriel is addressing Zechariah regarding the birth of John the Baptist and his role in preparing the way for Jesus. The first-century Jewish audience would recognize the reference to Elijah, a prophet who was believed to have returned in spirit during their time (see Malachi 4:5-6). By stating that John will go before Christ “in the spirit and power of Elijah,” Gabriel is declaring that John will fulfill Elijah’s mission of preparing Israel for the coming Messiah. The phrase “to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children” and “the disobedient to the wisdom of the just” suggests a reversal of spiritual states, where older generations would come to understand and follow God's wisdom as communicated through their descendants.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 18. Whereby shall I know this? {w} The thing was improbable, and he desired evidence that it would take place. The testimony of an angel, and in such a place, should have been proof enough; but men are slow to believe the testimony of heavenly messengers. As a consequence of not believing, he was struck dumb. {w} Ge 17:17 __________________________________________________________________
