Luke 1:38

"For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”"

Key Reflection

In Luke 1:38, Mary responds with a statement of faith and humility, affirming that she accepts God's will, no matter how extraordinary it may be. The phrase "nothing spoken by God is impossible" reflects both the ancient understanding of divine omnipotence and the cultural context where miraculous events were not uncommon, particularly in light of the angelic announcement of her pregnancy to a virgin. Mary's response underscores her trust that even something as unprecedented as bearing a child through the Holy Spirit can come to pass, embodying the overarching theme of God's sovereignty over human circumstances.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 38. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid {m}, &c. This was an expression of resignation to the will of God, and of faith in the promise. To be the hand-maid of the Lord is to be submissive and obedient, and is the same as saying, "I fully credit all that is said, and am perfectly ready to obey all the commands of the Lord." {m} Ps 116:16 {n} "according to thy word" Ps 119:38 __________________________________________________________________
