Luke 1:54

"He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty."

Key Reflection

In first-century Palestine, the verse from Luke 1:54 spoke directly to the stark social inequalities and the common hope for divine intervention in addressing them. The text contrasts the lot of the hungry—likely referring to those living in poverty—who are promised abundance, with that of the rich, who face disappointment or emptiness despite their material wealth. This prophetic statement would have resonated deeply with a society where economic disparity was prevalent and where many awaited God's justice and mercy to redress these imbalances.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 54. Hath holpen. Hath helped or assisted. The word rendered "holpen" denotes properly, to take hold of one, to help him up when he is in danger of falling, and here means that God had succoured his people when they were feeble, and were in danger of falling or being overthrown. His servant Israel. His people the Israelites, or those who truly feared him and kept his commandments. See Isa 41:8,9; Ho 11:1. In remembrance {d} of his mercy. Or that his mercy may be remembered. {d} Ps 98:3 __________________________________________________________________
