Isaiah 28:14

"Therefore the LORD’s word will be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, fall backward, be broken, be snared, and be taken."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 28:14 vividly describes the Lord's message to a rebellious people. The verse portrays God’s instructions as layered and detailed—repeated precepts and lines, each building upon the last—to such an extent that they would lead the recipients into confusion and ultimately failure.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Wherefore ... -This verse commences a direct address to the scoffing and scornful nation, which is continued to the close ofIsaiah 28:22. It is addressed particularly to the rulers in Jerusalem, as being the leaders in crime, and as being eminently deserving of the wrath of God. Ye scornful men -Ye who despise and reproach God and his message; who fancy yourselves to be secure, and mock at the threatened judgments of the Almighty.
