Numbers 31:4

"Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for war, that they may go against Midian, to execute the LORD’s vengeance on Midian."

Key Reflection

Moses commanded the Israelites to prepare a contingent of men for military action against Midian, as part of God's directive to exact vengeance upon their enemies. The original audience would have seen this command in light of recent events where Israel had settled in the Promised Land and faced continuing threats from surrounding nations, understanding that such actions were sanctioned by and carried out on behalf of Yahweh to ensure the Israelites' safety and the purity of their faith.
