Numbers 31:29

"Levy a tribute to the LORD of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks."

Key Reflection

This commandment reflects a principle of divine ownership over the spoils of war, symbolizing that all material gain in battle belongs to the Lord. By requiring a tribute, it reinforces the idea that victory and resources are under His control and should be shared according to His will.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

An heave-offering -Render simply an offering, and compareNumbers 18:24. The verb from which the word here rendered “heave-offering” is derived, is rightly translated “levy” inNumbers 31:28.
