Numbers 31:20

"“Encamp outside of the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives."

Key Reflection

The Israelites were instructed to encamp outside their main camp for seven days after the battle against the Midianites, as described in Numbers 31. During this period, anyone who had come into contact with a dead body, whether directly through killing or indirectly by touching a slain person, was required to undergo purification rites on the third and seventh days. This practice reflects both cultural cleanliness laws and theological beliefs about ritual impurity, ensuring that the sacred space of the camp remained holy despite the grim realities of war.
