Matthew 8:5

"Jesus said to him, “See that you tell nobody; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”"

Key Reflection

In Matthew 8:5, Jesus instructs the centurion to keep his miraculous healing a secret while also fulfilling a ritual command by showing himself to the priest and offering the appropriate sacrifices (as detailed in Leviticus). This act of going to the priest serves both as a testimony to the fulfillment of Mosaic law and as a demonstration of faith, showing that even Gentiles can recognize and adhere to divine commands. This passage highlights Jesus' nuanced approach to maintaining the continuity with Jewish traditions while also subtly signaling the coming shift in religious practices.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 5. Capernaum. See Barnes "Mt 4:13". There came unto him a centurion. A centurion was a commander of a hundred men, in the Roman armies. Judea was a Roman province, and garrisons were kept there to preserve the people in subjection. This man was probably by birth a pagan. See Mt 8:10. {v} "a centurion" Lu 7:2 __________________________________________________________________
