Matthew 8:21

"Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”"

Key Reflection

In Matthew 8:21, Jesus uses a striking image familiar to His first-century Jewish listeners—the foxes and birds who find shelter but the itinerant Rabbi who has no place to rest. This metaphor underscores the unique circumstances of Jesus' ministry, where He is constantly traveling and has no permanent home. For an audience accustomed to the comforts and security of family or community ties, this statement would have highlighted both His extraordinary nature as "the Son of Man" and the challenges inherent in following Him.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 21. And another of his disciples, etc. The word disciple properly signifies learner; and was given to his followers because they received him as their teacher. See Barnes "Mt 5:1". It does not of necessity mean that a disciple was a pious man, but only one of the multitude, who, for various causes, might attend on his instructions. See Joh 6:66; 9:28 {g} "Lord, suffer" 1 Ki 19:20 __________________________________________________________________
