Matthew 8:4

"Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed."

Key Reflection

In first-century Israel, leprosy was considered a severe and contagious skin disease, rendering those affected ceremonially unclean according to Jewish law (Leviticus 13:45-46). The fact that Jesus stretched out his hand to touch the leper directly challenged societal norms and the religious prohibition against contact with the diseased. By doing so, Jesus demonstrated His authority over uncleanness and emphasized His willingness to interact with those deemed unclean by society, thereby performing a significant act of compassion and healing that would have profoundly impacted both the leper and the onlookers.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 4. See thou tell no man. This command is to be understood as extending only to the time until he had made the proper representation to the priest. It was his duty to hasten to him immediately; not to delay by talking about it, but as the first thing to obey the laws of God, and make proper acknowledgments to him by an offering. The place where this cure was wrought was in Galilee, a distance of forty or fifty miles from Jerusalem; and it was his duty to make haste to the residence of the priest, and obtain his sanction to the reality of the cure.
