Matthew 27:19

"For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up."

Key Reflection

The verse from Matthew 27:19, "For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up," reveals a significant insight into the motivations behind Jesus' arrest and trial. The original audience would have understood that envy played a crucial role in the political and social dynamics of first-century Jerusalem. Envy among the Jewish leaders was not just personal resentment but also stemmed from jealousy over Jesus' popularity, his claims to authority, and his perceived threat to their religious and political power. This historical context underscores the complex interplay between personal animosity and systemic opposition that led to Jesus' crucifixion.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 19. Have thou nothing to do, etc. That is, do not condemn him. Perhaps she was afraid that the vengeance of heaven would follow her husband and family, if he condemned the innocent. That just man. The word just here has the sense of innocent; or not guilty. She might have been satisfied of his innocence from other sources, as well as from the dream. It is possible that the woman might have been a worshipper of the true God, and that she might therefore have desired that the Messiah should be released. I have suffered many things, etc.
