Matthew 27:52

"Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split."

Key Reflection

In the first-century Jewish context, the veil of the temple symbolized the barrier between God's presence and human approach in the holy sanctuary. Its sudden tearing from top to bottom, as described in Matthew 27:52, would have been seen by Jesus' followers as a profound sign that the way to the divine had been opened through Christ’s sacrifice. This event, coupled with the earthquake and splitting rocks, underscored the dramatic change in religious practice and the breaking down of barriers between God and humanity—a shift foreshadowing the universal acceptance of faith in Christ across all nations.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 52. And the graves were opened. Graves, or sepulchres, were most commonly made, among the Jews, in solid rocks, or in caves of rocks. The rending of the rocks, therefore, would lay them open. The graves were opened by this earthquake, but the dead in them did not rise till after his resurrection. And many bodies of the saints--arose. Of course it is not known who these were, nor what became of them. It is probable that they were persons who had recently died, and they appear to have been known in Jerusalem. At least, had the ancient saints risen, they would not have been known, and would not so soon have been credited as those who had recently died. Which slept. Which had died.
