Matthew 27:50

"The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”"

Key Reflection

This passage highlights the apathy and skepticism of those bystanders who preferred to observe rather than intervene in the suffering of Christ. It underscores a common human tendency to distance oneself from the pain of others, even in the presence of evident need for salvation or compassion.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 50. Cried again with a loud voice. He cried, "It is finished," Joh 19:30. It was in the height of his agony, probably attended with deep groaning, and uttered amidst sorrows which were never else experienced in our world. It finished the work of atonement; made the way of salvation possible; rolled away the curse from guilty men; and opened the kingdom of heaven to all true believers. Yielded up the ghost. This, though a literal translation, is unhappy. It means, resigned his spirit, or expired. The same phrase is used by the Seventy in describing the death of Rachel, Ge 35:18.
