Isaiah 53:11

"Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days and the LORD’s pleasure will prosper in his hand."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 53:11 speaks of a profound divine purpose in the suffering of the Messiah. The verse highlights that God's plan included allowing this individual to endure pain and sacrifice, resulting in his offspring being brought forth and his life prolonged. This passage reveals a complex interplay between suffering for sin (a key theme in Isaiah 53) and the ultimate blessing and vindication that follows. Through this suffering, the Messiah brings about a new life and prosperity, both spiritually and temporally, underscoring the transformative power of his sacrifice within God's redemptive plan.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

He shall see of the travail of his soul -This is the language of Yahweh, who is again introduced as speaking. The sense is, he shall see the fruit, or the result of his sufferings, and shall be satisfied. He shall see so much good resulting from his great sorrows; so much happiness, and so many saved, that the benefit shall be an ample compensation for all that he endured. The word rendered here ‘travail’ (עמל‛âmâl), denotes properly labor, toil; wearisome labor; labor and toil which produce exhaustion; and hence, sometimes vexation, sorrow, grief, trouble.
