Matthew 23:30

"“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the righteous,"

Key Reflection

In first-century Palestine, the practice of building and decorating tombs was a sign of respect and reverence for the deceased. By pointing out that the scribes and Pharisees had constructed monuments to honor the prophets and righteous individuals, Jesus highlighted their hypocrisy. To the original audience, this action would have seemed paradoxical—how could these religious leaders, who should be following in the footsteps of the prophets they revered, also be oppressing and persecuting others like those very prophets? Jesus' words underscored that outward respect for holy figures did not equate to genuine faith or righteousness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 30. And say, etc. This they professed to say by rebuilding their tombs. They also, probably, publicly expressed their disapprobation of the conduct of their fathers. All this, in building and ornamenting tombs, was a profession of extraordinary piety. Our Lord showed them it was a mere pretence. __________________________________________________________________
