Matthew 23:13

"Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

Key Reflection

The verse from Matthew 23:13, "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted," encapsulates a profound wisdom rooted in the cultural understanding of humility and pride. In first-century Jewish society, humility was highly valued as it aligned with God’s character and led to spiritual elevation, while arrogance or self-aggrandizement invited divine retribution. This principle underscores the importance of self-humbling before God, reflecting the dynamic relationship between human actions and divine response in the biblical narrative.

See Barnes "Mt 3:7". Hypocrites. See Barnes "Mt 6:2".
