Matthew 23:26

"“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness."

Key Reflection

In first-century Israel, scribes and Pharisees were known for their strict adherence to religious laws and practices, often outwardly displaying piety through rituals like cleansing cups and platters. However, Jesus’ scathing rebuke reveals that they neglected the inner aspects of righteousness—justice, mercy, and faith—which were far more significant than external ceremonies. This critique highlights the gap between their public display of holiness and their private deeds of injustice and wickedness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 26. Cleanse first, etc. Let them be filled with the fruits of honest industry, and then the outside and the inside will be really clean. By this allusion to the cup and platter, he taught them that it was necessary to cleanse the heart first, that the external conduct might be really pure and holy. __________________________________________________________________
