Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth (Matthew 13:6). In first-century Palestine, rocky ground was often thin and lacked the fertile topsoil needed for robust plant growth. This parable would have resonated with Jesus’ audience, who were familiar with agricultural practices; a seed planted in such barren soil would quickly sprout due to lack of resistance but without roots, it would soon wilt under the harsh conditions. Thus, the image vividly depicted those who heard the word with initial enthusiasm but failed to endure trials and testing, ultimately leading to their spiritual bankruptcy.
