Matthew 12:2

"At that time, Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the grain fields. His disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat."

Key Reflection

In first-century Israel, adhering to Sabbath laws was paramount; even minor infractions could be seen as serious transgressions. When Jesus and his disciples walked through grain fields on a Sabbath day, they were plucking heads of grain for food—a clear violation of the strict interpretations of Sabbath law prevalent at that time. The original audience would have understood this action as a direct challenge to religious authorities who saw any form of labor, even gathering food, as unacceptable on the Sabbath.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 2. Upon the sabbath day. The Pharisees, doubtless desirous of finding fault with Christ, said that, in plucking the grain on the sabbath day, they had violated the commandment. Moses had commanded the Hebrews to abstain from all servile work on the sabbath, Ex 20:10; 35:2,3; Nu 15:32-36. On any other day this would have been clearly lawful, for it was permitted, De 23:25. {k} "not lawful" Ex 31:15 __________________________________________________________________
