Numbers 15:32

"Because he has despised the LORD’s word, and has broken his commandment, that soul shall be utterly cut off. His iniquity shall be on him.’”"

Key Reflection

The verse from Numbers 15:32 highlights a severe punishment for those who deliberately disobey God's commands by despising his word. This reflects the seriousness with which ancient Israel viewed covenantal fidelity, where breaking a single commandment was seen as rejecting the entirety of God’s law and inviting divine judgment. The cultural context underscores that such an act was not merely personal but threatened the communal relationship with Yahweh, leading to the individual's complete removal from the community—a stark measure emphasizing the importance of obedience in maintaining this sacred bond.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Moses mentions here, as is his wont (compareLeviticus 24:10-16), the first open transgression and its punishment in order to exemplify the laws which he is laying down. The offence of Sabbath-breaking was one for which there could be no excuse. This law at least might be observed even in the wilderness. Transgression of it was therefore a presumptuous sin, and was punished accordingly.
