Mark 7:24

"All these evil things come from within and defile the man.”"

Key Reflection

In first-century Jewish culture, purity laws emphasized external rituals like washing hands to avoid ritual impurity. Jesus, however, challenges this focus by asserting that evil originates from within a person's heart and mind—acts of worship, speech, and thoughts can defile one more than physical actions. This teaching would have been surprising to his audience, as it shifted their understanding of holiness away from external practices towards internal morality and character.
