Mark 7:34

"He took him aside from the multitude privately and put his fingers into his ears; and he spat and touched his tongue."

Key Reflection

In the first-century Jewish context, this scene is profoundly dramatic and symbolic. Jesus, acting as a healer, takes the man aside in private to perform an intricate ritual: placing his fingers in the man’s ears and spitting before touching his tongue. This act would have been perceived as both unorthodox and miraculous, suggesting that physical touch combined with these specific gestures was necessary for the healing of this deaf-mute individual. The detailed description hints at a divine intervention, emphasizing Jesus' authority and power to perform healings beyond natural means.
