In first-century Palestine, dining was a social affair often associated with status and reputation. For Jesus to recline at table with tax collectors and sinners was scandalous; tax collectors were seen as collaborators with the Roman occupiers, making them outcasts in Jewish society. The original audience would have understood this interaction as deeply shocking, viewing such company as a rejection of social norms and religious purity standards.
