Luke 12:5

"“I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do."

Key Reflection

In Luke 12:5, Jesus is addressing his followers to reassure them about their safety and security in light of persecution. The original audience would have known that first-century Israel was under Roman rule, where the authorities had significant power over physical punishment but less control over ultimate judgment. Thus, when Jesus tells them not to fear those who can only kill the body, he is emphasizing that death itself does not end one's accountability or relationship with God; there is a greater authority beyond earthly rulership that will hold individuals accountable for their actions.
