Luke 12:13

"for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour what you must say.”"

Key Reflection

In Luke 12:13, Jesus is addressing a scenario where someone asks him to mediate in a family dispute over inheritance. The historical and cultural context suggests that such disputes were common among Jews during the first century, often leading to legal proceedings or family tensions. When Jesus responds by saying that "the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour what you must say," he implies that immediate spiritual guidance is available through divine inspiration, ensuring that one’s response will be appropriate and divinely ordained rather than contentious or self-serving. This reflects the belief in the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit to provide wisdom and clarity in urgent situations.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 13. One of the company. One of the multitude. This man had probably had a dispute with his brother, supposing that his brother had refused to do him justice. Conceiving that Jesus had power over the people--that what he said must be performed--he endeavoured to secure him on his side of the dispute and gain his point. From the parable which follows, it would appear that he had no just claim on the inheritance, but was influenced by covetousness. Besides, if he had any just claim, it might have been secured by the laws of the land. Speak to my brother. Command my brother. Divide the inheritance. An inheritance is the property which is left by a father to his children.
