Luke 12:3

"But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known."

Key Reflection

In Luke 12:3, Jesus emphasizes a fundamental principle of divine justice and omniscience: “there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.” This means that everything we do in secret—whether good or bad—will eventually come to light. The cultural context of first-century Palestine would have underscored the importance of public accountability and the trustworthiness expected within a community governed by both religious and social norms. In this setting, Jesus' words serve as a powerful reminder that God's sovereignty extends even into the private realms of human life, ensuring that all actions are subject to his scrutiny and judgment.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verses 2-9. See Barnes on "Mt 10:26". Also Mt 10:27-32. Verse 3. Shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. See Barnes on "Mt 20:27". The custom of making proclamation from the tops or roofs of houses still prevails in the East. Dr. Thomson (The Land and the Book, vol. i. p. 51, 52) says: \- "At the present day, local governors in country districts cause their commands thus to be published. Their proclamations are generally made in the evening, after the people have returned from their labours in the field. The public crier ascends the highest roof at hand, and lifts up his voice in a long-drawn call upon all faithful subjects to give ear and obey.
