John 19:37

"For these things happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him will not be broken.”"

Key Reflection

In John 19:37, Jesus' body on the cross is described as fulfilling a prophetic scripture where it states, "A bone of him will not be broken." This detail underscores the fulfillment of Old Testament passages like Exodus 12:46 and Numbers 9:12, which pertained to the Passover lamb. In first-century Jewish culture, the bones of a sacrificed animal were typically broken to hasten death, but Jesus remained intact, highlighting his special status as the Messiah and fulfilling prophetic promises about his sacrifice.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 37. Another scripture, Zec 12:10. We must here be struck with the wonderful providence of God, that so many scriptures were fulfilled in his death. All these things happened without any such design on the part of the men engaged in these scenes; but whatever was done by Jew or Gentile tended to the fulfillment of prophecies long on record, and with which the Jews themselves ought to have been familiar.
