Job 40:9

"Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?"

Key Reflection

In the context of Job 40:9, God is questioning Job's accusations and assertions. The original audience would understand that this interaction is part of a divine confrontation where Job has been challenging God’s actions and judgments throughout his suffering. By asking if Job will nullify or overturn His judgment, God highlights the gravity of Job’s stance, emphasizing that it is Job who risks standing in judgment rather than the other way around. This rhetorical question underscores the divine sovereignty and challenges Job's perspective on righteousness and justice.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Hast thou an arm like God? -The arm is the symbol of strength. The question here is, whether Job would venture to compare his strength with the omnipotence of God? Or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? -Thunder is a symbol of the majesty of the Most High, and is often spoken of as the voice of God; seePsalms 29:1-11. The question here is, whether Job could presume to compare himself with the Almighty, whose voice was the thunder?
