Job 40:23

"The lotuses cover him with their shade. The willows of the brook surround him."

Key Reflection

In Job 40:23, God uses imagery to describe the sheer size and power of the behemoth, a creature many scholars believe to be a large land animal like an elephant or a hippopotamus. The verse paints a picture of this beast being so immense that even the lotuses (a type of water lily) provide shade over it, while willows from nearby brooks wrap around it. This description underscores the magnitude and strength of the creature, highlighting God's power in creation. Such imagery was not only to impress Job but also to illustrate the concept that even mighty beasts are under God’s dominion, reinforcing the idea that humans should acknowledge and submit to divine authority.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Behold he drinketh up a river -Margin, “oppresseth.” The margin expresses the proper meaning of the Hebrew word,עשׁק‛âshaq. It usually means to oppress, to treat with violence and injustice; and to defraud, or extort. But a very different sense is given to this verse by Bochart, Gesenius, Noyes, Schultens, Umbreit, Prof. Lee, and Rosenmuller.
