Job 40:18

"He moves his tail like a cedar. The sinews of his thighs are knit together."

Key Reflection

In Job 40:18, God describes the might and power of His own strength through the imagery of a powerful creature, likely referring to a behemoth, a large land animal. The verse highlights two aspects: first, the majestic movement of the creature's tail, compared to the stately cedar tree, symbolizing its grandeur and stability. Second, it notes the robustness of the creature’s thighs, their sinews tightly bound together, indicating immense strength and durability. This vivid imagery underscores God's sovereignty over even the mightiest creatures, drawing attention to His unparalleled power in creation.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

His bones are as strong pieces of brass -The circumstance here adverted to was remarkable, because the common residence of the animal was the water, and the bones of aquatic animals are generally hollow, and much less firm than those of land animals. It should be observed here, that the word rendered “brass” in the Scriptures most probably denotes “copper.” Brass is a compound metal, composed of copper and zinc; and there is no reason to suppose that the art of compounding it was known at as early a period of the world as the time of Job.
