Isaiah 38:15

"I chattered like a swallow or a crane. I moaned like a dove. My eyes weaken looking upward. Lord, I am oppressed. Be my security.”"

Key Reflection

In Isaiah 38:15, the prophet describes his intense state of distress and despair through vivid metaphors. He compares himself to a "chattering swallow or crane," symbolizing anxious restlessness, and to a "moaning dove," representing deep sorrow and lamentation. His eyes weaken as he looks upward toward God for relief, emphasizing the weight of his troubles. The plea to the Lord, "Be my security,” underscores the need for divine protection and comfort in times of great distress. This verse reflects the cultural context where birds often symbolized various emotions—swallows with restlessness and doves with sorrow—and highlights the personal nature of Isaiah’s prayers, resonating with the broader themes of divine consolation found throughout Isaiah's prophecies.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

What shall I say? -This language seems to denote surprise and gratitude at unexpected deliverance. It is the language of a heart that is overflowing, and that wants words to express its deep emotions. In the previous verse he had described his pain, anguish, and despair. In this he records the sudden and surprising deliverance which God had granted; which was so great that no words could express his sense of it. Nothing could be more natural than this language; nothing would more appropriately express the feelings of a man who had been suddenly restored to health from dangerous sickness, and brought from the borders of the grave. He hath both spoken unto me -That is, he has promised.
