Isaiah 38:11

"I said, “In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the residue of my years.”"

Key Reflection

Isaiah 38:11 expresses a profound sense of despair and impending death, indicating that the prophet feels his life is cut short, as if he were entering into the underworld or realm of the dead prematurely. This verse highlights the intensity of his suffering and the brevity of his remaining days, underscoring the spiritual dimension of mortality and the direness of his condition.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

I shall not see the Lord -In the original, the Hebrew which is rendered ‘Lord,’ is not Yahweh, butיהיהyâhhyâhh. On the meaning of it, see the note atIsaiah 12:2(compare the note atIsaiah 7:14). The repetition of the name here denotes emphasis or intensity of feeling - the deep desire which he had to see Yahweh in the land of the living, and the intense sorrow of his heart at the idea of being cut off from that privilege.
