Isaiah 29:14

"The Lord said, “Because this people draws near with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which has been taught;"

Key Reflection

This verse highlights the disparity between mere outward religious observance and genuine spiritual devotion. The people's lip service and superficial reverence are insufficient if not accompanied by heartfelt fear and respect for God, as true worship should originate from a transformed heart rather than mere ritualistic obedience.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

I will proceed to do -Hebrew, ‘I will add to do;’ that is, I will do it. For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish -I will bring calamity upon them which shall baffle all the skill and wisdom of their wise men. Shall be hid -That is, shall not appear; shall vanish. It shall not be sufficient to prevent the calamities that shall come upon the nation.
