Acts 2:19

"Yes, and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days, I will pour out my Spirit, and they will prophesy."

Key Reflection

This verse signifies that the Holy Spirit would be bestowed upon all believers—both men and women—enabling them to speak prophetic words. It expands on the promise in Joel 2:28, illustrating a significant shift where spiritual gifts are no longer limited to a select few but are made available to everyone, emphasizing equality and divine empowerment within the community of faith.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 19, 20. I will shew wonders. Literally, "I will give signs." dwsw terata. The word in the Hebrew-- HEBREW --mophethim, means, properly, prodigies; wonderful occurrences; miracles wrought by God or his messengers, Ex 4:21; 7:3,9; 11:9; De 4:34, etc. It is the common word to denote a miracle, in the Old Testament. Here it means, however, a portentous appearance, a prodigy, a remarkable occurrence. It is commonly joined in the New Testament with the word signs, "signs and wonders," Mt 24:24; Mr 13:22; Joh 4:48. In these places it does not of necessity mean miracles, but unusual and remarkable appearances. Here it is fixed to mean great and striking changes in the sky, the sun, moon, etc.
