Acts 2:16

"For these aren’t drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is only the third hour of the day."

Key Reflection

In Acts 2:16, Peter addresses the accusation that the disciples are drunk by pointing out that it is still early in the morning—only the third hour of the day (around nine o'clock by modern reckoning). This timing was significant because it would have been highly improbable for people to be intoxicated so early, especially during a time when they were expected to be engaged in religious worship and observance. The cultural context underscores that in first-century Judaism, public drunkenness was not common or socially acceptable, making Peter's defense both logical and timely.
