Psalms 89:8

"a very awesome God in the council of the holy ones, to be feared above all those who are around him?"

Key Reflection

In Psalms 89:8, the psalmist describes God as a "very awesome God in the council of the holy ones," emphasizing His supreme authority and fearfulness among divine beings. The original audience would have understood this to underscore God’s majesty and power, even within the heavenly councils where other spiritual beings gather, highlighting His unique and revered status above all others.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

O Lord God of hosts -See the notes atIsaiah 1:9;Psalms 24:10. God, commanding the armies of heaven; leading forth the stars; controlling all forces - all powers. Who is a strong Lord like unto thee? -The original word here rendered “Lord” isיהYâhh, orJah. This is one of the few places where that word occurs, except in the compounding of words. It is an abbreviation of the name Yahweh, and has the same signification. See the notes atPsalms 68:4. The meaning is, that there was no one who in respect to power could be compared with Yahweh.
